I’m eating delightful pickled green beans as I write this. Green beans I’ve hoarded since last fall, and now it’s time. Time to eat all those canned delicacies that haven’t already been gobbled up over the winter months. Gotta clear the space for all the new abundance coming our way. ps. I will post a recipe for those green beans once they are in season, soo good.
Always I am seeking new ways to bring dandelion in to the mix. This green is versatile, free and of course, everywhere! Wild greens are just that, wild. You are what you eat. I don’t want to be some manicured, tended to, doted over, pest infested lettuce. I would rather be a rugged, crazy, and sometimes out of control wild thing. But hey, I love lettuce too it’s just nice to dabble in some wild greens when they’re available. Make hay while the sun shines. Dandelion is a great detox food for the liver, it’s also high in iron and mildly diuretic. So get picking! (more…)
In a final farewell to sweetness, last night both J and I indulged in *ahem* 4 pieces each of the delectable cinnamon toast crunch raw pie. Can’t say it was worth it, although every bite was so good, neither of us slept well and baby Mav was up all night. Too much energy for us all so late at night, oops. Needless to say we couldn’t ditch our coffee habit this morning. Although we both passed on the added cream and sugar regime. I did whip up a whole30 friendly version- a can of coconut milk and 2 eggs blended on high for 30 seconds. A good substitute for dairy indeed, though it is a bit odd to have raw egg in your morning coffee ( I didn’t tell J, he’d flip). I trust our eggs, they come straight from our 25 or so backyard chickens, I probably wouldn’t trust commercially raised hens. What a blessing to know where things come from these days.
Today I’ll tell you a little story. Once upon a time I was a devout vegetarian. Once upon that time I went to Jamaica and while my family went the famous Scotchies to dabble in world class jerk chicken, I passed. It was hard, but I was devoted, even amidst the smoky aromas. But I’ll tell you a secret, I may have tasted just the sauce. It planted a seed in my vegetarian heart and I haven’t forgotten now that I eat meat, that I have been craving jerk chicken since that very moment. One day I vow to go back to Jamaica and try (gorge myself on) the real deal. Until then, I have no qualms making it at home, but it’s never the same is it? I certainly don’t have an allspice tree in my backyard. (more…)
Do you ever feel bombarded with choices? I know I do, all the time, with everything in life there are just so.many.choices! Even mundane decisions can become overflowing with options, so many that I remain frozen and choose nothing. I think there’s some psychological term for this condition. It’ll happen a lot when I’m trying to figure out what to cook, or what to feature on the blog. Like today, I get sucked in to recipe land a la thai cuisine. There are so many great blogs fully dedicated to authentic Thai, how can I choose just one. I suppose it’s good to have choices, variety is the spice of life. (more…)
Happy daze, the rain is pouring and we have every excuse to be nestled in to our sweet little home. My life isn’t terribly exciting through the eyes of others. Of course for me and J it is, watching our little tot stretch his limbs and laugh at our funny faces. Something I do think others might be a touch excited about (tell me if I’m out to lunch) is that we’ve started doing elimination communication with Mavi. What’s that you may ask? EC or diaper free is just the norm for most people on this planet, but to westerners it is a foreign idea. We pick up on our babies cues to go potty and we give them an opportunity to do their business (should I be talking about this on a food blog?..I’m going to anyway) Their are a variety of cues that babies give their caretakers to let them know it’s potty time, raise the roof! Now we are feeling confident enough to put what we’ve learned through books and others experiences, into practice. You do not know how excited it made me to “catch” Mavi’s first poo! (more…)
Plums in curry? I know what your thinking. Yes, the beloved stone fruit is a really neat accompaniment in a savoury fully bodied curry. The acids in the fruit make the dish pop. Not that it’s loaded with plums, there’s really a small amount compared to the size of the curry. Small subtleties, just like the small things in life, count a lot when it comes to food. (more…)
Hey I'm Chantelle, my alter ego would be a mermaid if I wasn't such a terrible swimmer. I love writing authentically and cooking in my pyjamas. My favourite pastimes include eating avocados, travelling the world and hanging out with a toddler.
