15 of the Best Paleo and Primal Chocolate Recipes

My mom posted this funny meme today on FB

Well Chocolate or Cacao in it’s raw form is a power house of super food fury. Cacao pods are sooooo beautiful!

 Benefits of Eating Chocolate

Okay so there are a zillion different paleo brownie recipes out there folks, but trust me, this one is the simplest. Simple is good. Simple is chewy in the middle and crispy around the edges. Simple is almond butter, not tapioca, arrowroot and flax made into an egg swirl. Yes this recipe is sure to delight the simplest of happy folks.

3. Fudgy Cocoa Avocado Ice-Cream

This is a great secret of many a health nut out there, avocado and chocolate are stunning together. The creamy richness and healthy fats in the avocado, take the cocoa to the next level, plus you’ve just created a powerhouse of nutrients. Pretty sure that’s what Mike was going for when he created this delightful summer treat. I would eat this in all it’s variations- popsicle, pudding, fudge, you name it.

ps.haha “Just imagine what would happened if ice-cream was served during Congress hearings. No more
contentious public battles; only bargain and compromise. Politicians for sure wouldn’t be able to talk so much with their mouths full of ice-cream. ”

Ice Cream CAN save the world.

4. Mandarin Chocolate Truffles

Some people hate chocolate and orange, and some love it. Personally I’m in the latter category and proud of it. If someone gave me a box of these gorgeous little truffles I would either run away and eat them all, or share with all chocorange haters and convert them instantly. Cause these aint no Terry’s Chocolate Orange folks.

6. Magic Cookies

Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk? Good God, tell me you’ve tried this. Tis the goo of the gods. But really all sorts of grandma style recipes calling for condensed milk can now be converted or “paleoized” as the primal desire would state. This giant cookie bar is magic because it contains all good things, nuts, seeds, coconut and chocolate layered to perfection.

7.Paleo Nutella

I remember the first time I had nutella (who doesn’t?) it was a revelation in my hazelnut free world, and supposedly healthy! The amount of backpackers I’ve met who always carry a jar of nutella with them is astounding. There’s just something about the combination of chocolate and hazelnut that makes people go bonkers. Nutella has been around since the 60’s, can you tell me which came first, ferraro rocher or nutella? This paleo version is a new and improved junk-free version. Love it.

Blackberry, Rhubarb & Lemon Balm Crumble

Blackberry, Rhubarb & Lemon Balm Crumble

blackberry, rhubard and lemon balm crumble

Tis the season to be berry. To exude the ripe, ephemeral sweetness with a touch of sour thrown in.  To fill the lands entirety with awash of colours, all shades of berry, mingling with the greens that envelop them, most of the year.  Now, their time to shine, the bears are there biggest fans, they frolic and gorge themselves on blue juices and feed their young until they are good and plump. My berry noshing habits are the bane of anyone who comes for a walk expecting to get anywhere. Leisurely I stroll through the bushes, inspecting ripeness, relishing in readiness and popping the little wild gems one after the other.

Summers staple food lends itself generously to many a dish. Crumble is of course, a classic, and no summer is complete without some version of this comforting dessert.  The smell of lemon balm is so refreshing yet full of calm. I added it to the crumble hoping its aroma would shine through. It’s there, ever so faintly, amidst the strong tannins of the blackberry. My rhubarb is skinny and running wild, we found her in the bushes and I managed to harvest a few good pieces before our crazy chickens destroyed the whole lot. Who know chickens eat rhubarb? Who knew mice eat avocados? Who knew humans eat yoga mats?

Mango Coconut Energy Bites

You know how people declare something really really tasty as ‘drool worthy’? Well how many times do they actually drool. I mean come on most people don’t drool no matter how amazing something tastes. But you know what? I drooled. Eating one of these sweet delights drool fell out of my mouth in slow motion and hit my drooling baby on the head. For it was the sweetest thing I’ve eaten during this whole body reset and God knows I of course can’t stop looking at food gawker and pining over all of donut days creations. My jaw dropped over this one, seriously chica, did you just do that? Take my word for it, these energy bites are drool worthy, in a healthy sort of way.  (more…)

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Raw Pie

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Raw Pie

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Raw Pie- healthy version of the sugar laden cereal

I grew up eating massive amounts of cereal. Cinnamon toast crunch was one of the top choices (after reese puffs of course). This evening when I sat down to try my new creation, my jaw dropped. I have created a healthy version of my childhood favourite.  The base is brazil nuts, which was an experiment that came out better than expected. With a creamy banana coconut frosting which somehow doesn’t taste very banana like, maybe because I used super ripe bananas. The combination of everything just works. A nice paleo, raw, enzyme rich dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth. (more…)

Banana Date & Cardamom Muffins & Plans for a Whole30

Banana Date & Cardamom Muffins & Plans for a Whole30

banana date resize

Here’s the low down: I have fully acknowledge my sugar addiction, it’s there, no more denying it. Partially I blame pregnancy and all the cravings that you easily say yes to because well, obviously, it’s what baby wants! Right? Hm. Well when hormones are all awhirl it’s just hard to say no. Now the lingering sugar addiction is no longer serving us (me and Mavarek hub) – so I’ve decided to do the WHOLE30 and i’m bringing mister “organic gummy bear” junkie aka my partner Jake along for the ride. Not that he’s super stoked about that but I’m the cook and I won’t be catering to his/my forbidden desires during this experiment. C’est la vie, oui?

Ok so for anyone who isn’t familiar with the whole30 dealio here goes. Basically for 30 days we cut out all potential triggers for ill health. That means no sugar (not even honey), no dairy (this will be tricky since we <3 our raw milk), no grains and of course nothing processed full of junky junks. Sounds awesome right?! Just plenty of good quality free-range meats, local organic vegetables, fruits and some nuts, seeds and healthy fats. A chance to quash those addictions that give us the belly gurgles, knix the habits that cause insomnia, and enlighten our minds to see where our attachments lie. That last point being the biggest one. Since we all need to eat to live, there’s a lot of emotions that come along with our nourishment. Comforts, attachments, delights, regrets, it all ties in with our food choices. Practicing a whole foods, clean approach, that really is as close to an ancestral diet as we get in modern times, and can help shed some light on us.

Putting it out there people : Join us if you will on this Whole 30 challenge, you can do it! We can all support each other and I will be posting a whole30 friendly recipe everyday. Starting June 1 lets learn a few things about our whole beings and feel really REALLY good.

Chocolate Banana Avocado Muffins

Chocolate Banana Avocado Muffins

chocolate banana avocado muffins

Greetings from my the muffin section of my brain, a part that I never knew existed. Until these babies popped into my head, all part of my ploy to coax Jake into eating less goodies. And myself too, though I’ve never been a fan of ‘the muffin’ typically leaving you to feel like a muffin, nor am I a fan of muffin as a term of endearment, nope I’ll stick to buttercup, or sweetikins thanks. However, things are changing, these actually give you energy! They are light yet high in protein and nice and moist. Probably kudos to our fatty friend the avocado. If you want something sweeter you could add a bit more coconut sugar or honey but I think these are just right.
